PROPOSAL SUMMARY
The SafeHaven International Alliance (SHIA) proposes a comprehensive project to combat trafficking in persons (TIP) in South Africa. Through grassroots awareness campaigns, community engagement, and strategic partnerships with Kimberly Civil Society Organization (KCSO) and in direct partnership with the Department of Home Affairs of the Republic of South Africa, the project aims: (1) Increase public understanding of TIP (goal 1); and (2) mobilize action to prevent migrant exploitation both internally and externally (goal 2). The anticipated impact of the TIP Awareness program is to help migrants identify the many TIPs risk factors, recognize and report TIPs, and reduce the demand for labor and sexual exploitation in South Africa. Through the engagement with partners such as Kimberly Civil Society and the Department of Home affairs, program participants are expected to use the acquired knowledge and values to bring about the much-needed change in the wider south African society.
INTRODUCTION TO THE ORGANIZATION APPLYING
SHIA is a non-governmental organization that focuses on the promotion of human rights and the fight against any form of human trafficking worldwide.В SHIA has rich experience particularly in anti-trafficking strategies, and community networks, and is firmly involved in social justice activism.В SHIA is comprised of experts, who are experienced in legal, advocacy, survivor assistance and community engagement undertakings. As such, the non-profit organization is well-rounded and capable of handling the complex issues associated with human trafficking.В Human trafficking prevention involves working collectively, and coming up with strategic solutions, necessary to dismantle any form of social injustice.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Human trafficking, particularly TIP presents a great concern to South African human rights. Although attempts to deal with TIP are numerous, there is still low awareness, and a lot of cases do not come to light which leaves a cycle of abuse and immunity. As reported by the US Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), between 2007 and 2022 there were over 11,000 human trafficking cases reported to South African Police. Furthermore, between 2018 and 2021 over 800 South African children were recorded as human trafficking victims. Despite the high numbers, only 77 human traffickers were convicted.
More so, data reported indicates a significant undercounting of TIP victims largely due to an inactive national TIP task team. Although there are attempts to deal with TIP in South Africa, there is still low awareness, and a lot of cases do not come to light which leaves a cycle of abuse and immunity. TIP Awareness Program (TIPAP) seeks to mitigate this highly prevalent problem by driving awareness about TIP among the most vulnerable population, migrants.
PROJECT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The purpose of TIPAP is ultimately to educate the TIP-prone population in South Africa.В The TIPAP program acts as a catalyst for the enhancement of the relationship between the United States and South Africa through collaboration, creating awareness, and promoting shared values as the two countries fight human trafficking.В Four objectives must be met to attain the program goals are:
Objective 1: Develop culturally appropriate social awareness programs customized to the requirements and experiences of migrant communities.
Objective 2: Offer training and resources to give migrants the capability to detect trafficking symptoms and get assistance.
Objective 3: Organize community engageme...
