Health professionals depend on FBA results to formulate evidence-based care for patients. From the case analysis, MC’s (patient) target behavior is hitting his head with fists. The FBA analyses key areas through direct, indirect, skill, and performance assessment. Research affirms that professionals find it challenging to identify potently reinforces in patients with mental retardation (Fisher et al., 1996). Thus, a functional analysis is crucial in identifying the function of the behavior in the patient. The information equips the medical practitioners with the best intervention practice for the patient. Therefore, designing the FBA equips different stakeholders in the health field with evidence-based intervention practices for patients with similar conditions. This paper discusses the target behavior in the provided case scenario using a functional behavior assessment to determine the optimal care for the client.  Indirect Assessment Indirect assessment involves collecting relevant information about the patient from the parent or guardian who is nearby. This is essential since it provides data that is utilized in the assessment. Research conducted by Baron et al. (2021) established that indirect assessment utilizes information from caregivers or parents to make informed decisions. The patient’s mother is going to complete a functional analysis screening tool. The information clarifies the antecedent and consequent events that might trigger the patient hitting his head with his fists. The functional analysis screening tool analyses any potential triggers, the frequency, and the intensity of the episodes. Parents offer vital information to determine the potential triggers and patterns associated with behavior (Baron et al., 2021). Therefore, the rationale for selecting the tool is that it identifies factors that cause a given behavior. Direct Assessment Direct assessment, such as ABC data, offers information on antecedents, behavior, and the consequences of a behavior. Based on research findings, direct assessment involves scoring observations to identify behavior patterns (Baron et al., 2021). The information offers insight into the patient’s behavior. An ABC observation is conducted in various settings to identify the potential triggers of the patient hitting their head. The patient will be observed in their natural settings, such as the community and home. The observation for each episode is documented. The patient will be analyzed to understand their behavior after an episode. ABC provides an objective view of the behavior and ensures a comprehensive understanding.
