Social anxiety disorder
This is a fear one has of being humiliated or embarrassed in front of people (Medina, 2020).
People suffering from social anxiety disorder tend to view other people in their presence as superior at public speaking and at other aspects of socialization. Hence, they tend to avoid making even the slightest mistakes and when they do, they blow them out of proportion.
People with social anxiety disorder have a general fear of things. For instance, they find it uncomfortable to use public washrooms, they fear being put on the spotlight or having to attend social gatherings. Generally, people with social anxiety disorder prefer keeping to themselves (Medina, 2020).
Symptoms
A persistent fear of being exposed to scrutiny or the opinions of unfamiliar people (Medina, 2020).
Exposure to a situation that creates fear may lead to a panic attack.
The recognition that one’s fear is unreasonable and excessive (among adults).
Intense distress or anxiety in feared situations.
Altered normal academic or occupational routines due to situations of social anxiety (Medina, 2020).
Stigmas
Social anxiety is shyness and, therefore, avoidable (Cuncic, 2020).
