The United States, under President Barrack Obama, declared healthcare as a basic right in 2008. According to Maruthapu (2013), the number of Americans without health insurance by 2010 amounted to over fifty million people. This led to the passing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act of 2010 on the bid of raising the health standards of most Americans who are living in poor conditions as either unemployed or low-income earners. This has hence created a shift in the medical programs adopted in the United States to take care of the issues relating to healthcare insurance. The government has adopted plans to help the maintenance of a healthy nation by providing insurance to most citizens using programs such as Medicaid, Tricare, and Medicare.
Access to medical care is a universal need of all citizens. According to Maruthapu (2013), the logic behind the medical care right is the fact that health care is a basic right to the sick. According to the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2012, it is clear that every individual has a right to be treated when sick regardless of the social status, income level, and race, all sick people should be attended to. The act hence attempts to create a balance in the healthcare insurance industry in the United States by creating equal opportunities in all levels of income and social status for US citizens. For these reasons, it arguable that healthcare is a basic right for all Americans.
