Women’s Health: Postpartum Depression
Introduction
Postpartum depression (PPD) is defined as a major depressive episode that occurs after giving birth, which affects 1 in 8 women around the world (Richards et al, 2024). PPD differs from the passing “baby blues” in that its symptoms are prolonged and debilitating, making it difficult for mothers to function, connect to their baby and socialize. Postpartum depression (PPD) is considered a vital public health issue in women’s health. It has deep, long-term consequences on the mother and child alike. A child may experience deleterious effects on their cognitive and socio-emotional development because of PPD. Likewise, the mother is also at risk of self-harm due to PPD. The plan here describes a methodology that helps in a systematic synthesis of empirical papers published over the last seven years (2018-2025) to identify recent developments in risk factors, consequences of PPD on mother-infant dyad, and recent gaps in access and delivery of care.
Background Information
Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a serious women’s health challenge that is often hidden from view. In fact, PPD greatly exceeds the more familiar “baby blues”, which are fleeting feelings of sadness. It is a major medical complication of giving birth. PPD occurs in the perinatal period, conception to one year after giving birth. Further, it is a complex mood disorder, which alters your mood, and affects how you think, feel and act. Just like how the baby blues affect more than 80% of mothers and last for about two weeks, PPD requires medical assistance (Sisák et al., 2025). It is a serious illness and the woman and child need medical assistance.
PPD is common which shows that it is a global public health issue. Across the globe, roughly 10 to 20 percent of women suffer signs of perinatal depression. In the United States, statistics show that one in eight women report having symptoms of PPD after their child birth. In some states and in certain populations, that number goes as high as one in five. Many developing countries are especially impacted by this crisis, with rates of prevalence that may even reach 20%. Sadly, up to 50% of cases of PPD go undiagnosed because of the stigma of maternal mental illness and the patient not disclosing their symptoms (Sisák et al., 2025). There is a gap in diagnosis, but there is also a bigger treatment gap because only less than 15 percent of mothers get treatment for maternal depression.
Untreated mental health conditions in mothers due to this under-diagnosis is known to be a leading cause of maternal death. Suicide makes up nearly 20% of postpartum deaths sadly (Holopainen & Hakulinen, 2019). There are various and interrelated causes that may predispose a new mother to PPD. The major risk factors for this condition include a personal or family history of depression or anxiety, having depressive symptoms in pregnancy, and not having social or spousal support (Saharoy et al., 2023). Socioeconomic circumstances like poverty, obstetric a...
