Nursing Goals Post-Licensure
What brought me to this point?
Nursing is one of the most interesting careers since it deals directly with human lifestyle focusing on the provision of quality of care to patients that ensures healthy living. The nursing career is not all about making money or gaining knowledge but ensuring that people are given quality healthcare services that guarantee ultimate productivity. Such knowledge is also beneficial to immediate family members since it enables me to take good care of them.
My journey to the Highline College nursing program seems interesting and adventurous since I had to do a lot of self-evaluation before making any decision, in this case I had to thoroughly reflect on my previous lifestyle in relation to where I had desired out of my professional life in the future. My first decision was to make an application to the University of Washington-Seattle in Fall 2015 where I was accepted. This happened immediately after obtaining an Associate Degree with direct transfer agreement at Seattle Central College. However, I had to involve my immediate family members to help me in decision making. In this case, my parents talked to me about the importance of taking a major in Public Health. Afterward, they advised me on the benefits of working as a Public Health Officer and brought to my attention the idea of becoming a nurse. At first I had no idea about the demands around nursing career and especially the expectations required of a nurse in the United States. I did my own background research on the requirements for one to be a qualified and Registered nurse (RN) in the United States of America. Before making my final decision I had to do thorough research on the academic qualifications for one to access Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), as well as Doctoral of Nursing Practice (DNP).
After my background research on nursing career and convincing ideas from my parents, I made a solid decision to major in Pre-Nursing. The program lasted for a few months and I already had my qualifications after the first quarter since the prior requirements of the Public Health program are almost similar to the RN program. Immediately after completing the preliminary programs on nursing, I undertook the CAN program, where I received my CNA license, of which afterward had to travel back home to Eritrea in Summer 2016. My next move was to apply to shadow a nurse at Oncology Hospital in the City for the purposes of learning how to take care of cancer patients as a nurse. I had to be very careful during this period since English is my second language, in the United States, therefore, high possibility of missing on the explanations which may eventually result in a mistake dealing with patient during the clinical rotation.
I had to make a lot of inquiries from the nursing professionals back home in Eritrea for the purposes of learning some basic knowledge of nursing in Eritrean local language, for the purposes of not being left behind in classwork. The learning took place at a professional level where I gained knowledge on the principles of dressing as well as removing the sutures. During the period, I had a chance of performing some measures such as IV blood draw for the patient on chemotherapy. One of the professional nurses advised me on how to handle the patients' moments before, during, and after the radiation therapy. In this case, the patient should be taken to the dentist's office for the purposes of checking their dental formula on a regular basis. This is since if not checked, radiation therapy can possibly risk the patient’s dental decay. After completion of the 2 weeks duration practicing nursing skills I was awarded a certificate for the completion of the program. The experience I had undergone made a good stepping stone for launching my pursuit for nursing career in the international platform.
Upon coming back to the United States, I took a nursing program at Renton Technical College (RTC) in the first quarter. Additionally, I got my associate in art degree at South Seattle College while working full time as nursing assistant. I was dedicated, therefore, got a GPA of 3.8, my plan was to transfer to Seattle University but at the same time I did not consider time wastage. In this case, I made applications to join Seattle central, south Seattle, north Seattle, RTC, TCC and Highline Colleges. After 3 months except North Seattle, I got accepted every college that I applied to. It was difficult decision for me to choose between Seattle College and Highline because south Seattle is where I took all my classes and it feels like home. Afterward, I chose to join nursing program at Highline College (HC) since most of my colleagues at work recommended the school’s program. Majority of the nurses I work with finished in Highline and, therefore, advised me that it is a great school. Every one of them also passed the NCLEX the first round, and this boosted my confidence to join HC. It is also of advantage to me since I live just 10min away from Highline. Due to fear of failure on retaking National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), as per previous experiences from students, since it could hurt my nursing program accreditation, I restarted with the HC nursing program. I had given myself the chance of catching up with the course contents for the purposes of building a stronger foundation for my higher education level in...
