Create an overview of an Integrated STEM Unit with Science and one other learning area. Based on your unit, create a 60-minute lesson that you will deliver to a student from your chosen age-level and demonstrate evidence of their learning. This task comprises the following components:
1. Create an overview of Integrated STEM Unit that leads with Science (approx. 700 words in total).:
Include the title, learning goals, year level, and overall inquiry question/STEM problem (not included in word count);
Draft an evidence-informed rationale to explain what is being integrated, and why and how are you integrating them (approx. 200 words).
Identify relevant ACARA curricula, target scientific concepts, possible alternative conception(s), and how they will be represented (not included in word count);
choose a high-quality Science Unit from those featured in this unit;
adapt the unit into an Integrated STEM lesson by including one other subject area (Design & Technologies OR Digital Technologies OR Mathematics). Your adapted unit should feature an Elaborate Task and a Summative Task that purposefully integrates the two subject areas.
2. Based on your unit overview, create a detailed lesson that features a sequence of Engage-Explore-Explain activities that you can trial with a student from your chosen age level (approx. 600 words).
Completion of this Assessment Task relates to Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.1-1.6, 2.1-2.4, 3.1-3.5, 4.1, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 6.1
Demonstrate a critical understanding contemporary theories of teaching and learning science for primary school (or early childhood) settings.
2
Relate the Big Ideas and key scientific concepts to the science curriculum to support the development of scientific literacy.
3
Design an integrated STEM unit and deliver a learning sequence appropriate for primary school (or early childhood) students.
4
Reflect on your ongoing development of pedagogical content knowledge in science as it relates to your professional practice.
5
Communicate in a scholarly manner

Introduction
The "Magical Mixtures: Exploring Materials and Their Properties" STEM unit for Year 2 provides students an opportunity to study materials together with their adjustability through mixing. As a unit which aligns with the Australian Curriculum sections AC9S2U03, AC9TDE2K01, and AC9TDE2P01 the program crafts a learning sequence that combines Chemical Sciences with Design and Technologies to encourage scientific literacy development alongside curiosity and design thinking through active inquiry-based activities. This unit implements three main objectives which include recognizing different materials and their attributes and studying their transformations when blended as well as transferring gained learning for solving actual challenges. Different student groups compose objects from blended materials as they develop techniques to explain scientific findings using specialized vocabulary. The main inquiry question guides our objectives which focus on discovering ways to modify materials through blending mixtures for useful applications. This educational integration derives its academic foundation from constructivist and socio-cultural learning theories because they explain learning as a social active practice. Students build knowledge by participating in meaningful project-based learning activities which permit them to explore and reflect while conducting experiments. The curriculum includes specific teaching approaches to address typical incorrect ideas among students about water dissolving every solid material or the impossibility of separate mixtures by implementing planned scientific experiments along with educational dialogues. According to Skamp and Preston (2021) students need proper guidance to identify physical changes and chemical transformations in addition to learning how to overcome scientific misconceptions. The unit enables conceptual change through fostering child observations of phenomena and providing vocabulary such as "dissolve" "separate" and "texture" which enhances their knowledge of material behaviors.
Rationale
The ACARA resource "Everyday Materials: Investigating Mixing and Changing" serves as a base foundation for the science unit and the unit uses this resource to provideeducaitonal facilitation. Students investigate reversible and non-reversible changes by performing activities that combine sugar with water followed by flour with water and oil and water mixtures on separate occasions. The activity aligns with the recommendations of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2022), which asserts that learning science should ensure the students understand the core topics of science so that they can be able to apply them. To support understanding and communication the unit uses basic documentation methods that combine tables along with visuals and flow diagrams. Students receive an open-ended invitation to create a school snack menu in the Elaborate Task where they substantiate their selections using their laboratory observations along with knowledge about material characteristics. A team of students designs products during the Summative Task while trying different combinations to present their findings at a “Materials Expo”. The final event serves both to enhance students' scientific knowledge and evaluate their creative abilities as well as communication skills and teamwork while design application gets rated through a rubric system. The teaching practice demonstrates alignment with Harlen’s (2015) recommendation for working with broad scientific ideas. Harlen (2015) asserts that students achieve the most through purposeful investigative work which includes deep conceptual understanding linked to real-life applications. Through a focus on observable results and practical objectives the unit guides students to adopt scientific habits of thinking yet remains consistent with Harlen’s principle of teaching inquiry along with reasoning skills before memorization activities. The learning experience of "Magical Mixtures" demonstrates excellence in STEM education integration because it develops early-year students through scientific inquiry combined with critical thinking and problem-solving methods.
