Behaviour Analysis and the Implications for Practice
Part A: Context Statement
This analysis was done in the pre-room setting in an Australian suburban school. The population of students is about 400 in the school, and the prep level has 24 students. The books will be arranged so that both blocks of literacy and numeracy and play-based learning environments will be equal to introduce adequate academics and social development. The setting serves children between five and six years, and classroom schedules encompass whole group, small group work, and free outdoor play.
The child who will be the target of this case scenario is a five-year-old boy, hereinafter Ethan (pseudonym). Ultimately, Ethan has gone through a trail of unfortunate events far too early in his life, particularly regarding parental divinity and the majority of his younger years growing up in such a volatile and impoverished background. Although there is no formal diagnosis, it can be observed that Ethan demonstrates some behaviour patterns that have pointed to impaired control of emotions, playing with peers, and the ability to focus on task-oriented activities. The elements of instability affected his ability to help him attach and respond to the classroom demands appropriately.
It is best realized in the transition sequences, starting with Ethan in the free play and moving to more organized literacy activities. In the process, he cries out, screams, or fails to comply. In mat time, he cannot remain sitting and listening attentively most of the time; his attention is not focused on the group activities, and he is bored. Ethan is an outcast, mainly gazing at the teachers and failing to initiate and sustain a friendship. In other cases, he repels anyone who approaches him closer, implying that he dislikes getting close to people. The above behaviours are, however, situational. To illustrate, Ethan is less engaged and less tight concerning outside games. When he communicates, he does not look so upset. On the one hand, nevertheless, when it comes to performing structured types of tasks, they will always be dysregulated indoors. The patterns suggest that his behaviours are situational and may be associated with feelings of security and the predictability of the different environments.
Part B: Analysis of Context
Ethan's behaviours are a distress message based on dysregulation and relational safety. A trauma-informed lens acknowledges that the behaviour of children and youth is usually a reflection of a need that is not being fulfilled, instead of being seen as an intentional misbehaviour (Bath, 2015). Through this display of emotional outbursts, avoidance, and withdrawal, we are given a good idea of his developmental needs and the impact of adversity at an early period.
Neurobiology and Trauma
The premature ordeal interferes with the normal developmental progress of the brain, mainly in areas that relate to self-regulation, memories, and executive aspects. Traumatic stress may lead to a process known as hijacking the frontal cortex by the amygdala, making the individual feel highly responsive and incapable of reasoning (Levine & Kline, 2006). The escalation of distress upon transitioning that Ethan experiences is likely related to such a stress response, wherein his noxiousness and survival systems dominate and overcome his capacity to self-regulate. The significance of this notion is further illustrated by Olson (2014), who underlines the implication of such a concept as neuroception, which conveys how our brain can perceive security or threat subconsciously. Ethan has trouble in the classroom when completing structured activities, which is w...
