Evidence of relevant and appropriate scaffolding is apparent throughout the lesson plan. The week’s unit plan should have a culturally relevant overarching theme, and you can select what content area/s you prefer to focus on for this theme. For the unit plan you will need the following components: Background - Discuss the class you are thinking about for this unit. You can include information about demographics, how many students overall, how many bilingual students, what are their backgrounds, grade level, etc. . Topic - The topic should be relevant to your bilingual students’ backgrounds and everyday life. Explain why this theme is relevant to your students. Here you will describe: What is your overarching theme and how will it be covered? Are there subtopics or inquiries that you and your students will cover each day? Overview of the weekly plan - This should be a one page table that shows an overview of what will be covered in the unit. Include bullet points for each day with relevant information. Objectives - For each day, you will need to have a content objective and language objectives (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Materials - For each day, you will list the materials needed for that day’s lesson. Mini lesson - Each day must include a description of the mini lesson that should take place and that leads to the activity. The mini lesson should include what the teacher will do in the whole group, instructional scaffolds to support bilingual students, vocabulary words, key questions that should be addressed in the lesson, when and how to monitor student learning, etc. . Activities - Each day/lesson must include one activity for students to engage in that cover both content and language objectives, and in connection to the theme. These activities must be grade level appropriate and must clearly describe the scaffolds for bilingual students.
