Movie Review: Maleficent
Introduction
In Maleficent, Disney depicts a female character that vengeful, but Maleficent charms the audience as a loving mother to the Sleeping Beauty. There are indications that Maleficent is also a feminist who is not afraid to stand for what she believes in, whereby motherhood and feminism are interwoven in the story. As such this review will focuses on the depiction of Maleficent in the film as well as the characterization of Princess Aurora the two leading female characters. Similarly, the characterization of Stefan will be taken into consideration, as this sets ground for the theme of victimization as represented by Maleficent’s actions following her betrayal b yStefan. This essay will further focus on the subject of women portrayal in the fairies and how this is related to the feminist edge in the story as well as strengths and weaknesses of the subject addressed.

The character of maleficent
Description/ summary of the subject
The film has a feminist angle, where the revisionist fairy tale focuses on Maleficent the villain, who is revengeful (Johnson). To begin with Maleficent and Stefan appear to have a mutual understanding and respect for each other. As the story progresses, Stefan gets power hungry and decides to clip her wings. At the time, there is no indication that Maleficent is angry simply because of betrayal, and there is also no hint time she started having anger issues. As Maleficent finally realizes the extent of Stefan’s betrayal, she vegeance, and liberation the people under Stefan’s rule.
Since Stefan crosses Maleficent she decides to get back at him, by cursing his daughter Princess Aurora. Nonetheless, Maleficent grows to love Aurora, and this sets the stage, for Maleficent to show her maternal instincts to try to save the Princess from harm in the long run. At the same time, this gives Maleficent the opportunity to rewrite the wrongs committed by uniting the two kingdoms inhabited by fairies and humans, where Stefan grew to be increasingly power hungry. In other words, Stefan’s betrayal is a significant event, as the leading characters show their true self from this point in time.
Strengths of the subject
One of the main strengths of the subject is that it projects a different idea about women in film. Disney movies depict princesses who have a narrow view about life and marriage, while also promoting unrealistic ideals. However, in the film, Princess Aurora looks up to Maleficent for guidance, and the notion of a strong woman who has an important role to play in the society is enduring. For instance, Aurora wants to understand whether Maleficent really had wings, and she confirms this stating that they were stolen from her. Aurora At the same time, it departs from the notion that the princesses are damsels in distress who wait for charming princes to save them. The character depiction of Maleficent and the princess is a new angle to the usual representation in Disney movies of damsels.
Another subject in the movie is that true love exists in different forms, and in the scene where Aurora agrees to work together with Maleficent, it is apparent that women who cooperate and work together are able to overcome difficult circumstances because of their love for none other. Towards, the end, Aurora proclaims ‘Our Kingdom has been revived’, and this was possible because Aurora and Maleficent collaborated to bring positive changes. However, for any form of love to flourish, there is a need for forgiveness as Aura forgave Maleficent for being curse. On the other hand, Maleficent did not forgive Stefan for his betrayal, and this shows that love does not necessarily conquer all. Greed and jealousy are factors that make it harder for true love to flourish.
Since the film has a feminist edge, the characterization of maleficent gives voice to beauties in Disney movies. Maleficent is n...
