The five variables in an expatriate performance management system are culture adjustment, headquarters support, compensation package, host/workplace environment, and job responsibilities. Cultural adjustment is one of the essential variables in the expatriate performance management system. The quality of an expatriate’s work performance is primarily influenced by their ability to adjust to the host country’s culture. Cross-cultural competence in terms of cultural knowledge and adaptive thinking patterns in the host country is vital to high job performance and low work stress. Overseas assignments can be overwhelming, and it is therefore essential for employing firms to provide pre-departure training and local support. Headquarters support is focused on making employees feel comfortable working overseas and remaining motivated in their tasks (Varma et al., 2020). The compensation package is another crucial variable that influences the success of an overseas assignment: the quality of human resources and level of employee engagement is primarily determined by the quality of the expatriation compensation. Generous compensation packages attract the best talent and ensure that expatriates feel supported during their assignments.
Host/workplace environment is related to the cultural adjustment variable. However, the focus is on the interactions in the work environment. How organizations operate internally differs from country to country. To fit in the workplace, expats must have the right attitude and overall personality.
