The Overarching Essay
Throughout history, great pieces of literature have been one of the greatest representations (if not transcriptions) of the stories of their own times. Whether directly or indirectly, these pieces of work could be divided into two themes depending on the aspect of life that they portray. For one, they can represent the historical events of their own times and/or the narrative of the author’s life. Thus, in this article much focus would be given on how these stories have functioned as mirrors of either two. More specifically our focus would be on American literature across different time periods.
Personal Problems
In between the two themes, Personal problems represent individual or group experiences, emotions, or ideas during the time of its writing. In Sojourner Truth’s message Ain’t I A Woman? she said “Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place!” She delivered this message in response to the ongoing battle to achieve equal rights, which by that time, seemed to exclude women. I am fearful of the small-pox, or I should have been in before this time.” This is a great reflection of one world problem that was very widespread during those times, but not today. Another great piece of historical work (if not the greatest), is Abraham Lincoln’s The Gettysburg Address. In his speech, Lincoln have given praised to those who dedicated their lives to protect the nation and the ideals that the founding fathers have created and envisioned for it. This is a great example of a piece of work, that narrated (although indirectly) a world problem, since it makes the listeners imply that at some certain point in history, there came a time when the nation’s ideals and principles were thre...
