The tourism industry has facilitated travel for business or leisure purposes. The industry serves different fields, including transportation, travel trade, attractions, and accommodations, among others. Despite the onset and impact of the Covid 19 pandemic, the tourism industry is slowly peaking up with the observation of the laid down health protocols. I got an opportunity to interview with Matt Camden, an assistant housekeeping manager at Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights. Camden is a very lively, industrious, and keen person who has worked in the hotel in various fields for seven years. This interview with Matt has presented in-depth details of his professional path.
Matt was born in Ithaca, New York, where he attended his junior and senior school. After high school, Matt claims that he started working in a neighborhood pizza joint (Sal's Pizzeria), where his love for hotels started. He studied in Ithaca High School due to its proximity to where his parents lived. Matt's ambitions developed while he worked at the pizza place, whereby his boss supervised various other pizza outlets in New York. Matt later joined Culinary Institute of America in 2020, where he undertook a degree in hospitality management. He also worked at a Domino's Pizza outlet while in college. Matt's said that his parents moved to California before completing his bachelor's course; hence, he attended his internship period at a Mediterranean Restaurant in Ocean Avenue. By 2007, Matt had completed his bachelor's degree and was looking for jobs. He opted for restaurants and hotels in California since it was his new home.
Concerning his line of duty, Matt commented that various purposes led to his career choice. His part-time job while after high school set a foundation for his preference. Firstly, he learned that his supervisor could make enough money from his lifestyle, whereas his work was not that demand. Matt claimed that the job was flexible and a great source of experience. As a result, Matt worked hard and aimed for the top position in management. Secondly, competition is stiff in the hospitality sector; hence, securing a job will make on competitive and gain value depending on customer feedback. Matt says that as long as he keeps his clients satisfied, more will customers will visit the hotel. Additionally, benefits associated with his career also led him to prefer the management sector. Lastly, experience is essential in the hospitality sector; therefore, Matt chose a management job that covers other fields. Matt noted that his duties included overseeing duties in housekeeping, front office, maintenance, and guest relations, among others.
Matt's first endeavored in the hospitality sector was after high school in 2001 when he worked at Sal's Pizzeria. The supervisor was a friend to Matt's dad; hence, the connections to work as a waiter. Working in his neighborhood pizza joint exposed him to responsibilities such as customer and colleague relations that are significant in the hospitality industry. Matt claimed that this first endeavor motivated him to seek employment in Domino's Pizza while in college as a part-time job.
Matt stated that he had worked in four different places before joining Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights. Initially, he worked at Sal's Pizzeria as a waiter. He later worked as a waiter at a Domino's Pizza outlet in New York. Matt performed his internship at Mediterranean Restaurant in Ocean Avenue in California for a period of two years. After completing his bachelor's degree, Matt said he got an entry-level job at Taco Maria in Costa Mesa, California, where he worked his way up to an assistant supervisor. Matt claims he later got a job as an assistant housekeeping manager in Comfort Inn Carmel by the Sea. Lastly, Matt secured a job in Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights as an assistant housekeeping manager before working his way up in seven years to become the assistant housekeeping manager.
Matt claims that Hotel Drisco is an upscale hotel in Pacific Heights, minutes away from iconic attractions in San Francisco. The hotel is located at 2901 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94115. The hotel houses an average of 50 employees and was founded in 1903. With the hotel's service of more than a century, Hotel Drisco has made sure that it integrates traditional elegance with modern services to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.
According to Matt, there is the general manager who is above him. Positions below Matt include housekeepers, cleaners, kitchen staff, front office staff, and the guest service agent. These positions have managers; hence, the hierarchy consists of the manager, his assistant, departmental managers, and departmental staff. All Hotel Drisco's employees are trained and qualified for their job descriptions.
