Mandatory Volunteerism
Contrary to what most people think, voluntary work in schools these days is not precisely 'voluntary' in nature. Instead, these works are forced into the children in the hopes of developing their skills to become a productive member of society regardless of how the skills they acquire would be really beneficial in the long run. Accordingly, in this paper, I would like to focus on the idea of 'mandatory volunteerism' in the public school system. This includes the advantages and disadvantages of volunteer works these days in light of its more significant aims of providing a holistic education for students. All in all, although some people think that mandatory volunteerism is crucial to develop a student's life- and career-related skills, a complete reform should be made to make it more effective.
Mandatory Volunteerism
One of the main reasons mandatory volunteerism lacks effectiveness is that most of the skills students could learn are farm from the skills they needed to succeed in life. In one article written by Cloud (2001), she narrated Christina Mullins' experiences who undertook voluntary service in Johns Hopkins in line with her academic requirements. However, rather than learning more about the medical field, she did was to file documents and other paperwork for eight hours a day. This was the same experience that I had when I undertook 'voluntary' work in our local community hospital as a part of our summer internship program.
