Most children worldwide wear diapers until they reach the age of toilet training. As a result, a qualitative life cycle analysis of single-use disposable diapers, which are widely used in most households and commercially washed diapers, is required so as to decide the best alternative. The evaluation includes considering the manufacturing material used and how it gets disposed of. Environmental factors such as energy consumption, solid waste generation, and water resource depletion are also considered. The paper will evaluate the best choice between single-use disposable diapers and commercially washed diapers by analyzing the environmental impact of each.
To begin, there is the disposable diaper, which is made from softwood and then transported to a pulp mill. The next step is diaper production, and once completed, the finished product is delivered to users who only use the diaper once. Following that, the products are placed in the diaper garbage, and the process is repeated. As a result of the large number of diapers discarded after a single use, the plastic and non-biodegradable aspect is an issue. Plastic is harmful to the environment, and with nearly 90% of households using disposable diapers, it becomes hazardous to the environment. On the other hand, commercially washed diapers entail cotton production and the cotton processing process. The nappies are then manufactured and transported to the user. After a single use, they are transported for washing and drying and then taken back to the users. As a result, collection and delivery processes are required for this option.
Another factor to consider is the land area for raw materials when choosing the best alternative. In comparison to disposable diapers, commercially washed diapers require less land area for raw material production. The disposable diapers are used once and disposed of in the garbage.
