1. The History of Medicine used to be written and taught only as the history of the great discoveries of great men that have directly impacted how we practice medicine today. More recently the History of Medicine has focused on patients’ experiences of sickness and healthcare. Write an essay that explores how taking “the patient’s perspective” helps us to understand more fully ALL of the following topics: the transition from the holistic humoral theory to theories that localize disease in particular organs or bodily systems; the transition from an open unregulated marketplace for medical treatments to the professionalization of doctors, surgeons, and pharmacists; and the crisis of the AIDS epidemic.
