Role of a Marine SNCO
The marine staff non-commissioned officers (SNCOs) are the real backbone of the Marine Corps because they prepare young officers for war by shaping them to be better leaders to lead the country to victory during the war. Essentially, leadership is constant and effective in marine life. The day-to-day and strategic Marine engagements define a future role. This leadership role is understood in education, perseverance, and value-sharing contexts that SNCOs establish with young officers. Currently, SNCOs’ role is of central interest. A marine SNCO has invaluable knowledge and experience of the corps and, therefore, is best placed to mentor, train, and lead young officers in overcoming complex environments and threats.
One of the roles of a Marine SNCO in developing young officers to ensure young leadership is prepared to overcome challenges presented by complex environments and threats is mentorship. The marine SNCO acts as a mentor to young officers to prepare them for war. They provide guidance, knowledge, and learning opportunities to young officers (Fullerton et al., 2020). As mentors, marine SNCOs provide advice based on their experience, which helps the young officers to make more informed professional decisions in war. In other words, SNCOs are a source of wisdom, experience, and inspiration to junior officers.
SNCOs also keep officers informed of their capabilities on the battlespace. Junior officers should be oriented and informed of the tactical situation and other issues likely to affect them (Hasík, 2014). They should also be notified of the unit's procedures learned by junior officers in their Marine schools or read in their field manuals (Ramkey, 2011). Most importantly, they need to know what they should focus on to succeed tactically.
Additionally, SNCOs inform young officers on how to fight different battles within the command. Doing so prepares them for complex environments and threats. Often, officers are the voice of the marines when dealing with higher headquarters (US Marine Corps University, 2016). The SNCO makes them aware of the chain of command's personalities, priorities, and quirks to successfully navigate those waters. For instance, if the commanding officer wants the command and the control systems to align with Marine's maneuver warfare philosophy, the officers must make quick decisions (Ramkey, 2011). The junior officers tend to have doubts, but SNCOs encourage them and support their choices as best as possible.
