Edmonia Lewis is an example of a woman who excelled in fine arts despite several odds. Being a woman of color, she encountered various obstacles, including being accused of poisoning two of her housemates and stealing the art products from her school. She was kidnapped, beaten, and sexually violated during the first incident, yet this did not stop her from her quest to become an American Professional Artist. To overcome the stereotypes against African American artists, she moved to Europe, hoping the world would see her as an American artist, not a black artist.
