A Remarkable Meet-up with my Childhood Friend
Yī nuò is my beautiful nickname, given to me by my parents after consulting a local fortune teller. The name means the ‘chosen one.’ The idea that the name meant my life’s mission was great, larger than one could ever think of, was instilled by a feng shui master, who asserted that the positive predictions made by my parents would come to be.
On that fateful day, I was graced enough to meet my American childhood friend, who I planned to take for a treat at my favorite Chinese Opera joint. My friend’s name was drawn from her prevalent behavior as a child. I remembered her for her vibrance, eloquence, and warm attitude since our first day as kindergarten pupils. I was dressed in a modern Hanfu dress with close-fitting silk embroidery on the chest and abdomen, a cross-collar, and retro patterns. My friend was dressed in rugged blue jeans and a white t-shirt. While I ordered freshly cooked seafood and a bowl of pepino melons that were in season then, my friend ordered a burger and a cold drink.
After taking a full course of healthy meals, I took her to an Asian musical club, where most of the singers and instrumentalists on that day were Chinese. I was amazed at the sound of traditional Chinese Opera. My friend was surprised to realize that vocalization was most important here, and Chinese music just needed light instruments. The music had a soothing effect and brought forth harmony across the room. Being in that club hall for two hours made me feel born again; I was uplifted. Later that evening, we agreed to take up an entertainment activity together. We decided to go bowling, one of my favorite games since I was a teenager. We played using special cosmic balls that produced a significant glow-in-the-dark. We also went horse racing and watched a Chinese martial instructor train young men and women. Although I would have preferred to engage in other entertainment activities to accommodate my American friend better, I made sure that I hyped her so that she could enjoy as I was. Just before midnight, we bid...
