Description of Proposed Topic and Critical Issues
This paper proposes a project that deals with mental health awareness among college students due to the high incidence of mental illnesses among students. Current studies suggest that female students have a higher prevalence of a current mental disorder at 39.7 %, while male counterparts only have 25.7 % (Sivertsen et al.). The stigmatization of mental health worsens the students' feelings. This is mainly secondary to the students failing to seek help, as they feel lonely and distressed.
Therefore, this campaign aims to address these problems by encouraging awareness of mental health among the students, awareness of available resources, and encouraging students to put their well-being first.
Significance of the Topic
Concerning academic relevance, this topic has implications for psychology, education, and public health (Chu et al., 2023). Recognition of mental health issues in further education is more important than ever before simply because students continue to face various stresses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and have become more depressed as compared to before, as explained. Jiang et al. (2022) explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the academic stress of students resulted in significant depression (Beta value: 0.298; p-value: 0.03), and there is also added stress from family issues during this time (Beta value: 0.321; p-value: 0.03).
Therefore, the students who are aware of the shortfalls and making resources available to the general public will help the campaign not only have an encompassing positive impact on the student's health but will also change the general health status of the campus.
