The Selected Sportβs Characteristics
Soccer/football is one of the most popular sports. It is also one of the most physically demanding sports that requires players to maintain optimal health, performance levels, and fitness.1 Soccer is not a steady-state sport. Rather, it entails repeated cycles of high intensity sprints, jumps, tackles, and direction changes that are interspersed with some periods of low-intensity walking or jogging.2 A typical match lasts 90 minutes, during which the players could cover between 10 and 13 kilometers. Moreover, high-intensity running could constitute about 10% of this distance. The implication is that there are high demands on both aerobic and anaerobic metabolic system. As a result, there are serious implications regarding the nutritional requirements of soccer players. Essentially, these players would require high carbohydrate needs. Why carbs? Carbs equals energy, making them vital for fueling high-intensity efforts in muscle glycogen. But carbs need moderation, in which case it is recommended that athletes consume about 5-10g/kg of body weight per day. Distribution in consumption should not be even across meals. Rather, consumption should peak around matches and intense training blocks, which explains why strategic timing is essential.
Nutritional Issues and Challenges
1. Preseason needs/concerns/differences
In soccer, preseason is often marked by a sudden and significant increase in intense activity caused by a higher training load as players return from off-season. As such, the primary goal of nutrition, as in all activities that involve explosive power, is to optimize performance and ensure effective recovery between sessions.3 High carb intake is recommended. However, some challenges come to the fore, with the most common being ensuring energy intake matches the heightened energy use to prevent premature fatigue. This also has to take into account that the athletes must also remain fit, meaning watching for weight gains.
2. Energy requirements and Predominate Metabolic Pathway
Energy expenditure among soccer players is highly variable. As a result, energy requirements for individual players vary, often in the range between 3000 and 4000 kcal/day, which depends on the training intensity and body mass. Aerobic metabolism is the predominant metabolic pathway. This means that metabolism is responsible for fueling the majority of match play and low-intensity activity. Even so, given that some of the most decisive moments in games, for instance, jumps, sprints, and tackles, rely heavily on anaerobic glycolysis and the phosphagen systems, nutrition must support both by availing sufficient carbs for glycogen replenishment and substrate for glycolysis.4
