What are the Negative Consequences of Living in a Society That Values Modesty and Propriety over Freedom of Expression?
Life is very dynamic and complicated especially on issues of societal values and principles; there are individuals that propose the traditional ways of living where strict values and standards were followed. On the other hand, others believe the liberal world is better and more fulfilling (Israel, 39). There are always consequences in every system that is adopted by society and this may be positive or negative. This paper discusses the negative consequences of living in a society that values modesty and propriety over freedom of expression.
Propriety can be defined as living or conforming to certain conventional standards that are based in society. This means that behaviors and morals in society are expressed or established by someone and need to be followed. The rules developed are considered correct and should be followed with no question or breaking them (Yeazell, 49). It infringes on the rights of the citizens in that they are forced to live as guided by others. For instance dictating the type of dressing, or body parts to be exposed by an individual is violating the rights of expression. While proponents may argue that it is discipline and respect for authority it gives a negative impact in following what others think is right.
Society that embraces of living in values of modesty and propriety over freedom of expression has extended this to gender bias and inequality. Women are more endowed to follow the strict rules and regulations such as the dress code (Yeazell, 89). Such as society will develop negative factors to discriminate against women who may bring a lot of developments if there is freedom of expression. Such a society will not be able to speak against social evils which will continue oppressing the residents to the point of living miserable and unproductive lives. For instance speaking against racism a...
