Common Cause is a public interest group that does not expect to profit from the government. However, the activists that represent this group earn money through their social and political activities. Based in Washington, D.C., Common Cause has its members in over 34 states of the United States of America. John W. Gardner founded this group in 1970, who was the former Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (Lando 133). The group is widely known for its efforts of bringing the Vietnam War to an end. The members of this group believe in the power of democracy. According to them, the government should reflect everyone as it serves. They support the idea that every person should be given a chance to speak of his mind regarding the political system of the country or a particular politician, without any discrimination.
It’s safe to say that all Americans want and deserve their voices to be heard and their opinions to be noticed. However, the current political system of the country does not allow all of them to express their feelings and instead permits only a few groups or communities of people to do so. Common Cause aims to help people understand what their rights and duties are. They believe in democracy and want the society to be free of any differences based on cast, religion, background, gender or race. In order to make it happen, they undertake a variety of social welfare projects and initiate campaigns to create awareness among people.
