How The Giver Connects to Sociology
The movie The giver has various themes that portray how films connect to sociology. Sociology is a broad term that describes the various social problems that a community faces. More so, it studies the functioning, development, and structure of a society. The movie focuses on micro aspects of a society as opposed to macro aspects. It reveals the various problems that the members a small community faces as a result of new rules that have been implemented by their elders. Various people have used films to educate individuals of the social problems that a community faces. This work covers the various themes in the movie The Giver and how they connect to sociology.
The first theme that comes out in the movie is how people are blindly obedient to the laws that have been set to govern them. In the movie, people blindly accept the customs and rules of their society, including those that are detrimental to their lives. For instance, they killed babies who were different from others and old people claimed that they were no longer productive to the community (‘’Major Themes in The Giver’’). One instance is seen when Jonas’ father kills the lighter-weight twin male because the act has become a routine. The members of the community never questioned the reason why such rules were implemented and their benefits and challenges. This shows the senseless and horrible actions of the elders of the community.
Another theme that comes out in the film is the value of the individual. In a social structure, there are various classes of people such as the unfortunate, the fortunate, and the middle-class. Most of the affected people are the unfortunate and they have less power to question what is wrong. Therefore, they tend to follow the rules as instructed even if they do not like them. Most of the rules are set by the elders who have achieved the status of owning a family and have various roles including directing the other members of the society ("Major Themes in The Giver."). In the movie, the elders were male. Nevertheless, Jonas’ had an ascribed status of being a child and he was from a different tribe.
