In this assignment, you will be doing all three of those things as you uncover your research, evaluate your information, and illustrate your thesis. Make sure you aren’t just writing a report about a subject, you want to have an argument about that subject. Use your resources to strengthen and support the credibility of your point.

Directions: Your research paper should be:

Use in-text citation with signal phrases. Quotes, paraphrases and summaries must be cited. Indicate what source you used at the end of the information you use. Read pages 486-494 very carefully. There you will find examples of how to cite your work.

Use signal phrases to introduce quotes, paraphrases and summaries. Signal phrases let the reader know you are going to use someone else's words and/or information. See pages 486 "Identifying the Source" for a list of signal phrases.

All information that comes from a source must be cited. Failure to do so with result in that information not being accepted. All essays will be checked for plagiarism. Any information found that is not cited will not be accepted and points will be deducted.

QUOTES MUST NOT BE LONGER THAN 3 SENTENCES. Any quote longer than 3 sentences WILL NOT be accepted.

Two different sources are required for each paragraph. Each paragraph must have at least two different sources to argue your point.

Work Cited page - with a minimum of five resources. Only list those sources mentioned in your paper. highlight the main idea sentences of each paragraph in yellow. For this assignment, the first sentence of every paragraph. Every paragraph must have a main idea. A main idea is a sentence. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. It is not part of a sentence. You should only have ONE main idea sentence for each paragraph.

highlight the in text citation used at the end of the sentence in LIGHT blue.(Do not use dark blue. If I cannot see under the highlight, it is incorrect.) Only highlight the source (in text citation), not the whole quote. You should have two per paragraph. Review Chapters 29 and 31.

Do not use any form of "you", "I", "we", "us" etc. This is not a personal essay nor are your giving advice. Do not use contractions. Spell out the words.

You should only have 5 sentences highlighted and at least 2 in text citations (sources) per paragraph.

Essay Format: MLA

Title: Be creative.

Introduction Paragraph: Introduction - Give background information about your topic. What does the reader need to know to understand your essay? Your thesis statement will be the last sentence of your introduction.

Thesis Statement/Claim - (The thesis statement is the last sentence of the introduction.) This thesis statement is the point you are arguing about your topic. It must include your topic. Look at the topic you chose. Use 'should', 'needs to' or 'must' in your thesis statement.

Body Paragraph 1: Reason/Support One for your thesis - Begin your argument! Give the first reason to support your point in your thesis. Look at your thesis. Use words from your thesis and the first point listed. Your main idea will be your first sentence of the paragraph.

Body Paragraph 2: Reason/Support Two for your thesis - Continue to support/argue your thesis! Give the second reason you listed in your thesis to support/argue your point. Your main idea will be your first sentence of the paragraph.

Body Paragraph 4: Reason/Support Three for thesis - Continue explaining your thesis and supporting argument! Give the third reason you listed in your thesis statement to support your point. Your main idea will be your first sentence of the paragraph.

Last Paragraph : Conclusion: Summarize your findings. Recap and wrap up the points covered in your essay. This main idea will look similiar to your thesis statement. Do not use your thesis statement. Reword it.

Humans do not exist in a vacuum. Rather, they stay in a society that shapes their daily lives directly and indirectly. In particular, society plays a major role in the way individuals view the world around them and guides their actions. No one can deny the influence of society in establishing the choices that people make. Influence often comes through societal pressure, whereby the community around an individual plays a significant role in shaping their lives, including influencing how they behave and their overall well-being. Pressure comes to different individuals in different ways. In today’s world where commercial adverts, celebrities, magazines and social media dominate, these have pressure as the common denominator. In this context, the impact of pressure on gender is a long-held debate. There is no right or wrong answer to the debate given that different viewpoints point in different directions on the matter. While males and females face societal expectations, females face a disproportionate amount of pressure compared to their counterparts males.
Scholars like Clay, Vignoles and Dittmar (458) agree that females face immense pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards. From a tender age, girls are told that their looks are very important. Cultures around the world amplify this by putting women's and girls’ bodies at the center of intrigue based on connotations associated with beauty like sexuality. Traditional and social media does not make it better. Media is at the forefront of setting standards about beauty by displaying images and videos of women and girls who are propagated as beautiful. There is a lot of emphases on females’ physical appearance, which can lead to destructive body image expectations. These pressures often come in the form of advertisements in magazines, TV and social media, perpetrating an unrealistic outlook and definition of beauty. Surprisingly, Quittkat et al. (864) highlight that males do not face such a disproportionately high pressure to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty. Such a distorted view leaves males with less pervasive and demanding pressure than females. When the media portrays ideal male physiques, the emphasis is not as intense as on females. This creates an unbalanced view regarding women, making them more vulnerable to harmful practices like body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and eating disorders as Aparicio-Martinez and others (4177) observe.
The education editor for BBC Branwen Jeffreys indicates that girls and women face more pressure to be perfect, especially in educational achievement. Girls face heightened pressure from society to excel academically compared to boys. The empowerment of women has prompted the need for girls to attend school and achieve more. Education is considered an ingredient for the empowerment of girls. While this is a good move, it subjects girls in school to immense pressure to achieve more academically. Females are expected to excel by performing exceptionally well in all subjects. The pressure makes school girls anxious and creates self-doubt for those who are unable to meet the high targets. On the contrary, while society pressures boys to achieve academically, this tends to be less persuasive. Society considers boys to have alternative ways of succeeding including pursuing nonacademic interests like sports. This leaves girls with more pressure to score higher grades than boys, even when this is not viable for some of them.
