Psych C1000 basic psychology class overview

Student's Name Professor’s Name Course Date Course Summary and Response My Learning during the Class Throughout this semester in Psych C1000, my experience of exploring human behavior, thought process, and emotional aspects has been thought-provoking and eye-opening. Before enrolling for the course, my understanding of psychology was restricted to symptomatic considerations, treating it as a subject of helping people with behavioral problems. However, the topic areas I covered during the class, including personality, research methods, learning, development, mental health, and therapy, have broadened my view of psychology both as a theoretical subject and a practice that encompasses the entirety of human experience. The chapter that I found most appealing was the one revolving around human behaviour and learning, more specifically, the behavioral approach. As I also covered in my reflective pieces, the behavioural processes that I covered in the class were applicable to my experience with workouts, leading me to conclude that reward and consequences remain the key drivers of human motivation to do or avoid anything. Particularly, studying operant conditioning and classical conditioning led me to better make sense of my own experience and that of others. Similarly, the insights gained from Skinner’s work helped me develop concrete ideas about the role of consistency in reinforcement of habits and otherwise. Another key area of learning was the exploration of therapies for certain disorders and the exploration of what words do and do not. From this, the key takeaway that stood out to me was the role of therapeutic alliance. I learned that relational aspects are as crucial to foster healing as the type of therapeutic choices and the client’s adherence to the intervention. The therapeutic relationships accompanying empathy are generally stronger, which accelerates the healing process through the influence of emotional support and the feeling of being truly understood.
