Journal Entry 1: Oral Stage of Freudian Theory
One of the concepts we have covered in this course that I will talk about is the oral stage of Freudian psychoanalytic theory. According to psychoanalytic theory, the first psychosexual stage during a child's development is the oral stage, in which the main infant's concern is oral gratification (Elkatawneh 2). During the first 18 months of life, the organ of pleasure of an infant is the mouth. The theory states that the newborn makes contact with the first object of libido, its mother's breast, through the mouth. I have a personality of biting my nails that I believe I developed during this stage of development because I was born to a career mother who went back to work shortly after I was born. Thus, I did not spend adequate time with my mother during the oral stage of development.
A nanny was employed to take care of me, and she used to take me to my mother in her office for breastfeeding. As Freud indicates, during the first stage of an infant's development, their main concern is oral gratification, which they mainly obtain from their mother’s breast (Elkatawneh 2). I believe that my nail-biting behavior originated from my childhood experience with my mother. While my mother understood the importance of breastfeeding and took some time off to breastfeed me, the time my mouth spent on my mother's breast was insufficient. It is important also to notice that when babies of this age are not breastfeeding, they usually put almost everything else they encounter into their mouth, including clothes, toys, and their fingers (Lantz et al. n.p).
