Dr. Cassell defines suffering as a severe state of distress related to the forthcoming, perceived, or actual threat to a person's intactness or existential continuity. Throughout the article, Cassell maintains that pain is different from suffering. In addition, he argues that suffering is personal and inmate experience; suffering can be considered severe. Particular distress and that suffering occur when an individual realizes their completeness is under threat and disrupts their intactness.
