Third Short Reflection Essay
The end of the Syracusan defeat of the Athenian fleet provides a rich background around which emotions of grief, anger, and revenge surface in Ferdia Lennon's Glorious Exploits. These powerful emotions are triggered by two big events: Astyanax's execution and the violent disruption of the stage performance, the latter bringing out the interplay between human sentiment in the face of loss.
The audience is first moved to raw emotion by the execution of Astyanax, the young son of Hector, which directly ignites profound grief and anger. Gelon reminds the crowd when he says, “Everyone here has lost something in this war. Look a-fucking-around- you” (Lennon 198). At this moment, the shared suffering of the Syracusans and Athenians comes to the centre stage, stressing that there is nothing but a human experience that is not shared in war. Lampo’s description of weeping fishermen and soldiers in the audience’s reaction underscores the moment’s importance. "It is the maddest thing," he reflects. Syracusans and Athenians become a combination of the chorus of grief for this make-believe" (Lennon 207); this is where the audience's universal pain is combined to make Astyanax's death a tragedy beyond the narrative.
