Many people have tried to define higher education variously. In their attempts, they have come up with ambiguous definitions that have many gaping holes. David Wallace, in a rejoinder, argues that people need to explore the value of higher education as opposed to material benefits to get a better understanding. He contends that many people are ignorant of the value of education, just like the fish in the water. To understand higher education, one needs to evaluate different dimensions, such as its importance and application.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, higher education refers to “education beyond the secondary level” and is primarily provided by colleges and universities. The same dictionary defines education as giving systematic instructions, especially in schools and universities. So, essentially, higher education is getting instructions at a higher level. Many people believe that these instructions are loaded with tons of knowledge. However, this definition is a bit vague because it does not expound on the importance of receiving these instructions, what Wallace refers to as the value of education.
