The Theme of Justice (Novel Review)
In Flagg’s (2000) novel, the theme of justice has been explored in the queer manner. The novel is a depiction of how often moral justice overrides legal justice. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café tells the story of the residents of Alabama’s Whistle Stop through the eyes of an elderly lady currently residing in a Nursing home. Ninny Threadgoode is the elderly friend of a modern woman, Evelyn Couch, who is trying to find her true identity. Evelyn becomes a regular visitor to Ninny, who continually tells her the stories of her youth life in Alabama’s Whistle Stop. These stories, being a faded reflection of Evelyn’s own life, enable her to begin a new, satisfying life.
The plot revolves around two time periods, and it is satisfactory to say that much of the action takes place I the second time period. The present time is the 80s, while the second period spans the early to mid-20th century. There are several ways in which the theme of justice has been highlighted, explored and tampered with in the course of this four hundred and sixteen page mellow drama. In the novel, the concept of justice brings to mind the administration and maintenance of what people deserve. In the opening chapters, the reader understands that Evelyn and her mother-in-law are not in good terms. Regardless of the situation, Evelyn finds it within herself to visit her elderly and sickly mother-in-law at the nursing home. Even though this incidence adds to the turbulence in Evelyn’s life, it also plays a role in showing how care and love for the people close to us may require us to do things we abhor. One will understand that Evelyn visits her in-law simply because she is married to Couch.
