“Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Café†by Fannie Flag is an American novel that is based on human relationships. It involves a story that mainly revolves around a café of fiction in the state of Alabama, which was well known for fried green tomatoes, an imitation of the real world “Irondale†café in Alabama. All the same, the author uses the title “Fried Green Tomatoes…†to indicate the nature of relationships that human beings share amongst themselves. The novel contains themes of friendship, love and companionship that go beyond age, race, culture, economic and social status and above all gender. In fact, it is for specific reasons that the author includes the idea of perceived lesbianism in the novel.
First, there is the friendship between Evelyn Couch and Ninny, and that of Ruth and Idgie, who ran the ‘Whistle Stop Café' together. The women are highly liberal in their thinking and actions. Idgie chooses to dress like a man and even drinks alcohol. Evelyn who was initially suicidal demonstrates such ways of independence. Towards the end of the novel, she takes charge and control over her life. She engages in her own business and goes to workouts to get her body in good shape. She even loses her ignorance of black people, whom she never noticed before.
The story also reveals a huge mix of social aspect in a community where people are determined to share with each other, live in love and harmony.
