In the fall of the House of Usher, Edgar Allan creates a scary setting; thus making the story to be horrific. The specific year and geographical location of the story are not told while events of the story are described. Anonymous narrator arrives at the house of Usher during a soundless, dark and dull day. The narrator realizes that the house is filled with evil. The atmosphere in the house is diseased, occupied by decayed trees and covered with murky ponds. Though, the house is decaying, its structure remains solid. The narrator makes his visit to the house since Roderick Usher (his friend) sent for him a letter requesting him to come. In this letter, Roderick expressed that he was emotionally and physically sick; therefore the narrator came quickly to help Roderick (Edgar 12). He finds Roderick as less energetic and paler than before. Roderick says is suffering from fear and nervous while his senses are tensed. It seems that Roderick even fears his own house.
In the Lottery, Jackson uses suspenseful atmosphere to develop the story and reveal actions of the characters. The Lottery starts well with sunny and fresh warmth summer day. Residents are ordinary people living in the small rural town. The boys move around collecting and piling up stones while men talks about their own issues (Jackson 103). Women also gather themselves together exchanging ideas and gossiping. The schools are recently closed for summer break that enabled children hang around playing during the day. The setting is set in a small rural town. However, nobody knows the reason why the boys are collecting stones. The author uses details and suspense atmosphere to set the mood. Village children move around collecting stones putting the stones into their pockets to create a pile in the square. Mr. Summers is the one who sponsors the lottery since he has plenty time to do many things for the village. He came with a black box, which is not the normal original box usually utilized for the lottery.
From one generation to another only one person from Usher family has successfully survived while others die prematurely. Madeline (Roderick’s sister) is also suffering from a mysterious illness that cannot be reversed. The narrator stays in the house for many days trying to make Roderick becomes cheerful, though Roderick’s spirit is not delighted. Madeline eventually dies.
