For the final essay in this course, you need to reflect on what you have learned using the Student Learning Outcomes and the Marketable Skills designated for this course. Student Learning Outcomes include your knowledge of research, how to integrate quotes and paraphrases from primary and secondary sources into an essay, how to write an essay without plagiarizing, how to create a credible or trustworthy style in your writing, and how to use MLA form or another documentation system to avoid plagiarism. The Marketable Skills for the course include Written Communication, Critical Thinking or analysis, Teamwork, and Personal Responsibility. Take some time to think about what you've learned in terms of these outcomes and skills. Jot down details for each outcome or skill, then start writing a 6-10 paragraph reflection essay. Assume your audience is a new student to the course and you are relaying to them what you learned. Create an engaging introduction and perhaps a summary conclusion to leave them with your final thoughts on English 1302. Then use the body paragraphs of the essay to discuss what you have learned. You might use the following heuristic to help you generate details. 1. What did you learn about researching secondary sources in the library databases or from the web? How did you decide on the credibility of a source? Did you find it hard to read some of these sources? What have you learned about MLA form for parenthetical citations and Works Cited pages? What other documentation styles have you worked with in other courses? 2. What did you learn about paraphrasing and summary writing in this course? How will those skills translate to other courses or a job as part of the Marketable Skill of Written Communication? 3. Did you have problems with plagiarism in the course? If so, how did you correct those problems? If you had no problems with plagiarism, what skills helped you avoid plagiarism? How do these ethical choices relate to the Marketable Skill of Personal Responsibility? Did attention to these ethical choices help you to create a credible style in your writing? 4. Were you able to develop Teamwork Skills in the course through the shared work of defining terms and feedback groups? Are you a lone wolf? Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date A Reflection on Learning Writing Skills through English 1302 English 1302 introduced me to another challenging academic facet in terms of writing skills that were more than writing essays, as I had ever learned. When I was a new student, I was of the opinion that this course was just about writing, which is one of my well-loved activities. However, I learned afterwards that it was not only about writing, but also about learning to effectively communicate, responsibly write, analyze a written piece of work with a deep lens, and ethically join academic debates. I polished my skills of research, paraphrasing, teamwork, critical thinking, and documentation work, which enabled me to grow in marketable skills that are essential to survive in college and professional life after it. Research comes first when talking about the writing skills I learned through this course. Before the 1302 course, searching was quite nerve-racking for me, because whenever I visited journal articles, books, or other credible sources, I was overwhelmed due to the large volumes of numbers and a great deal of details attached to each source. It happened because I did not know the usage of filters, subject tags, and keywords, which I learned through this course. I also got an idea that using credible sources is a far cry from using non-credible sources, which can easily be evaluated by looking at authorship, publication date, peer-review status, and references to other academic works by the author. I was also surprised to know that very difficult to read articles became easy and manageable for me as I learned to take a bird’s eye view of the work through abstract, reading all topic sentences and annotations. Another powerful skill was MLA documentation that I developed during this session. It helped me place parenthetical citations smoothly and accurately, followed by a Works Cited page at the end of my work, which made my work credible and plagiarism-free.
