In "Classism as Power," Henri Zerner tries to differentiate the ideas of "classical" and "classism." It is safe to assume that anything classical belongs to a specific period in time, and classism is just belonging to a particular class. Zerner gives particular examples of things in life, which are described as classical. These may include music or architecture (Zerner 35). The list is vast, but these two are the most renowned for their periods. Classical architecture is Greek and Roman times while classical music was made towards the end of the eighteenth century and at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Trying to understand the meaning of classical any further than what is already known is a difficult task. I find Zerner's exploration of what is classical, not useful because the term will always be used to refer to specific things made during certain periods in time. The same applies to classism. The article gives a statement about the kind of suit that can take you to places of power and the kind of suit that cannot. It is a known fact that physical appearance and dress code matters in individual settings. In everyday life, how one dresses determines the reactions of others. A smartly dressed person is likely to earn more respect than a shoddily dressed individual. Usually, this determines the kind of class people think you belong to. If you are dressed smartly, then you are classy. But if you are poorly clothed, then you are ordinary.
