Introduction
Public space have to be demographically open which essentially means that they are occupied andused by people from different backgrounds with respect to race, age ,occupation and gender among other factors. As such most of the people that meet or use the specs are anonymous to each other.The other characteristics that give the public spaces their identity include the uses that the majority of the people using them access them for and the physical appearance that mould them.
Thesis statement
Public spaces are slowly turning into private spaces in disguise.
One such public space that drew its identity from the activities that took place is a park in Toronto called the Christie Pits (Cunningham 88). Back in the year 1933, the public space was the site of a violent race riot. During the riot, Swastika club members attacked one of the basketball team that was composed largely of Jewish locals. This single event sparked an annual demonstration that would be held at the park against racism. Majority of the matches and events that supported of abolishing racism sprouted from the Pits park and hence its identity. With time however the subject of identity of the park has changed as is the case with most others. The shift is due to the fact that there are going to be others of the same movement, such as the issue of racism that are going to arise from subsequent attempts for radical change. There is also the issue of the uses and users multiplicity of the spaces that means there is a lot of diversity. While some of the people may find the efforts of say racism in affiliation with the public spaces appealing, other just want to rest and enjoy the space other than use it for a revolution.
