Impressionist ideas stemmed from a convergence of influences, including technological development whereby artists could use oil paints packaged in tubes (Fénéon 273). Camille Pissarro is one of the well-known impressionists who painted landscapes and scenes of modern life using direct observation. Like other impressionists, he used pure, intense colors to illustrate the effect of light (Fénéon 275). The Apple Harvest of 1883, an oil painting on canvas at Dallas Museum of Art Munger Fund, portrays Camille's ideologies of modern life. During his time, manual labor and communal living among peasants was a common practice. Unlike other impressionists, Camille used traditional subjects, but in a more daring way, he experimented with colors using unique scientific theories to present his ideas which he majorly observed from nature (Fénéon 277). The Apple Harvest is a colorful picture with bright colors like green, orange, blue, lavender, red and pink carefully used to depict a scene of apple harvest in the French countryside (Pissarro's People 1). The painting depicts people laboring under the shadow of a large tree; the sunlight displays shadows of these laborers in the foreground. Using small wipes of pure vibrant colors, Camille created decorative patterns of color to present a dazzling effect of bright afternoon sunshine (Pissarro's People 2).
