Student’s Name: Professor’s Name: Course Code: Date: Philosophy 100 Paper Philosophers have described self-knowledge as the understanding an individual has over one’s specific mental state. These mental states range from individual beliefs and desires to sensations. The term self-knowledge is also applied when referring to comprehension and the individual's persisting self, characteristic traits, and conditions of identity. Simply, one’s beliefs resonating from an individual’s self-information characterizes one’s self-knowledge. Self-knowledge play a key role in defining or specifying possible conditions for the actualization of our individual authority and practices. While self-knowledge features one’s mental states; self-knowledge can be noted as unavoidable, not evidence based and requires no rationalization. These aspects of self-knowledge are important in understanding individual’s mental content and their personal identity at large. These elements are critical when distinguishing self-knowledge from knowledge. Therefore, we do have self-knowledge. Throughout this paper, I will explore why we have self-knowledge and determine the possible ways we acquire self-knowledge. To understand the presence of self-knowledge, we should first examine how self-knowledge is cognitively distinctive. Individuals acquire the theory of mind through growth and interaction with their environments. The theory of mind is a process whereby individuals contemplate their distinctive mental states, which certainly differ from those of others in their environments. My beliefs, desires, and intuitions are unique to me, and so is my self-knowledge. However, is this self-knowledge undoubtedly accurate? Can an individual have a wrong belief about their existing desires, or in another case, can they be unaware of their desire? These questions are essential in examining the ele...
