Choose ONE of these four prompts below to respond to, making sure to have a central point or argument that is your thesis. Be sure to include quotes/evidence from the text that support your ideas.
1. Oresteia: In what ways ate any of the characters each justified in the murders they commit, according to their own society’s logic, their own moral beliefs as presented in the play, and/or according to your own view of their behaviors? Focus carefully on specific characters of your choice and specific passages to make and support your analysis. Describe the different aspects of justice that they focus on to make'their arguments (are they appealing to authority? do they advocate for jusdce-as-revenge? etc.), how they justify their behavior, and whether (& how) you see those justifications as valid, problematic, or without merit, using evidence from the play to support and develop your reasoning.
2. Oresteia: Examine the roles of women in these plays. Then write a short essay analyzing the significance of gender by focusing on a specific character or two. (The Chorus in each play may be treated as one character.) What assumptions do you see the characters and/or society making about gender, and how does the play: undermine, contradict, cm uphold these assumptions in, specific passages and in the overall story? You may write on one play, or mention all of them, but be sure your discussion is primarily grounded in a couple of sections, passages, or events in the text, rather than general commentary on the plays overall.
3. Maxine Hong Kingston, “No Name Woman”: Why do you think thfe narrator’s mother tells her the story of her aunt, and why does the narrator then write the story for others to read? In order to come up With an answer to this question, you will have to think about many of the accompanying questions we talked about in class, such as: why did the villagers destroy the house and farm? What were some of the primary role(s) women had to play in village life? Why does the narrator/author decide to tell others the story, despite being warned not to? 4. James Baldwin’s Notes of A Native Son: Choose an image or passage from this essay that was particularly striking to you -and think about that image. Describe this image carefully, and explain where it appears in the essay. Tell us how the image functions in the essay, and how it helps Baldwin make his point What point is he trying to make with this image? Why did it leave a lasting impression on you? What thoughts, ideas, or questions does the image provoke in you, and how does it give you a different perspective on what Baldwin is trying to say in the essay as a whole? Everyone has a story to tell but the timing of when, how, and to whom it should be narrated depends on the nature of the subject and individual narrator’s ideologies. While some stories are worth sharing, others are better swept under the carpet. Maxine Kingston’s “No Name Woman” narrative is worth sharing despite her mother’s warning. She does not only tell the story but shares her personal opinion on the subject in the most captivating manner. The essay interrogates why the author’s mother told her the story of her aunt and what could have informed the narrator’s choice to write the story for others to read the warning notwithstanding.
It is the responsibility of a mother to ensure that she brings up her daughter with the accepted values of society. Every society has its unique way of nurturing their young ones to become responsible citizens. It is evident from the text that the author is at that stage of life where parental responsibility, especially for a girl-child is critical. She is an adolescent whose fertility is no longer in question, exposing her to social challenges akin to her aunt’s. Her mother tells her the story of her aunt so that she can have a clear picture of the consequences of getting pregnant at her age."Don't let your father know that I told you ...Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her could happen to you. Don't humiliate us. You wouldn't like to be forgotten as if you had never been born” (Kingston 1981, pg. 2). The narrator’s mother is merely fulfilling her responsibility as a mother to ensure that she grows up an upright woman. In the traditional Chinese community, it is an abomination for a girl to get pregnant and or gives birth while still living with their parent.
The social arrangement and organization of the author’s community is an essential pointer as to why the narrator’s mother tells her the story of her father’s sister. The community is so populace that any reckless affair with a wan would lead to incest. The consequences of a girl, the narrator’s age getting pregnant are better imagined than experienced. Other than humiliating her parents and kin, it exposes the community as a whole to lineage abracadabra. The author narrates that “parents researched birth charts probably not so much to assure good fortune as to circumvent incest in a population that has but one hundred surnames. Everybody has eight million relatives.
