As stated in the “Instructor Addendum to the Syllabus,” a Week 1 reading assignment, the sources must be online, and I must have unfettered access to all sources. Compose a persuasive response (minimum 500 words) that focuses on your opinion (thesis) about Dr. Gilligan’s argument below.
“It would be beneficial to every man, woman and child in America, and harmful to no one, if we were to demolish every prison in this country and replace them with locked, safe and secure home-like residential communities – what we might call an anti-prison.”
Agree or disagree with Gilligan, but take a clear stand on the issue.Develop a thesis for Formal Essay 3 and underline it in the introductory paragraph of your essay. In the Works Cited section use and cite the Gilligan source and only one other online source to support your thesis. The textbook and Blackboard are not outside sources.
The two sources used must list an author (both first and last name) and must be dated (minimum month and year).
Make sure that the text of your essay includes at least one direct quotation from each source. Direct quotations may be no more than 10 lines (accumulative). In-text citations are required for both sources.
Do not submit essays or a research paper in which a large part is quoted material. I want your writing based on your research.
Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. The essay must include a minimum of five, well-developed paragraphs: introductory paragraph that includes the thesis, three supporting paragraphs (minimum), and concluding paragraph. The Works Cited section does not add to the word count of the essay; however, it counts as 10% of the essay grade.
CAUTION: It is acceptable to use the Bible, other sacred documents, and reference sources but only as tertiary sources, not secondary sources.If the Bible is used, the formatting must conform to the example in-text citation and full citation in the course “How To” section, “How to Cite the Bible.” If another citation format is used, it will not be credited, and appropriate grade for that citation will be reflected in the final grade of the assignment.

POINT OF VIEW: Compose the essay from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, or the first-person point of view of a victim of a felonious crime. The thesis, however, must be written from a third-person omniscient point of view.
Just a reminder for anyone who needs it: When writing from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer or a victim, the voice in your entire essay must be the voice of a law enforcement officer (or victim), and the voice must be especially strong in the introductory and concluding paragraphs. Do not write about the voice, be the voice. Remind your audience in every paragraph who you are (law enforcement officer or victim). Write from only one point of view except for the thesis.
The language in assignments that require writing from a particular point of view must conform to the “English Composition Checklist.” For example, a dirty rotten scoundrel would probably use some unsavory language filled with inappropriate expletives, but if an English Composition student were writing from the point of view of a dirty rotten scoundrel, the voice must be that of a dirty rotten scoundrel, but the writing (usage, grammar, language mechanics) must be suitable for English Composition classroom expectations.Since this is an online course, the sources for all essays that require research must be online. As stated in the “Instructor Addendum to the Syllabus,” sources must be no more than five years old unless instructed otherwise. Ask the instructor about exceptions.

Persuasive Essay
Introduction
           Dr. Gilligan, in his article Punishment Fails. Rehabilitation Works argues that prisons have shifted their focus from rehabilitation centers to punishment institutions. He goes on to claim that prisons can be more effective in changing the behaviors of convicted persons if they are rehabilitative oriented rather than Punishment oriented. In support of his opinion, Dr. Gilligan claims that most prisoners usually embark on crime within three years of leaving prisons. This indicates that the punishments they get from prisons are not competent enough to ensure that the convicted person reform. This paper shall, therefore, justify why rehabilitation should focus more on the rehabilitation of convicted persons rather than punishing them.
Arguments
Dr. Gilligan, in his article, argues that “When people are dangerous to themselves or others, we restrain them whether they are children or adults. But that is altogether different from gratuitously inflicting pain on them for the sake of revenge..” (Gilligan, 2012, p. 1). This argument is a clear indication that people do not understand the primary purpose of prisons. The question that comes out of it then is whether prisons should serve as institutions of revenge or transformation. If this question is answered correctly, then it is without a doubt that Dr. Gilligan’s argument holds waters since prisons should transform convicts into law-abiding citizens by the end of their sentences.
