PRIMARY RESEARCH
You are to undertake primary research in the field of modern design history. You are to locate a primary text on the subject (including textual, visual and audio sources) not referenced in the class and then undertake a close reading of the text and write a critical / analytical essay that considers the purpose of the document (what it is saying and communicating to a reader/viewer/audience, the circumstances of its publication, and its historical/analytical significance in the context of the field of inquiry. The task is to frame a program of primary research (meaning the search for a document/source generated in the context of time, meaning a first hand, contemporary account of an event, a person an object) and, upon locating a source that meets the criteria of the assignment, assess its historical and then to assess the source, glean information from it and then analyse it. Central in your work is an analysis of the source in the context of the subject of modern design history. You are required to provide a printed copy of the text. Primary Research: Home Designs
The primary source I chose in the field of modern design history is the “Introduction Publishing the Modern Home: Magazines and the Domestic Interior 1870-1965” by Francesca Berry and Jeremy Aynsley. The journal focuses on the transition of home domestic interior as portrayed in the magazines. Between 1400 and the present, home designs have significantly changed not only in North America and Europe but also in other parts of the world.
