Student’s Name Institution Unit Due Date Letter from Birmingham Jail" Critical Reader Response On April 12, 1963, Martin Luther King was arrested for breaking an Alabama injunction against demonstrations in Birmingham. While in solitary confinement, he received a letter from Alabama clergymen who accused him of and the Birmingham Movement for inciting civil disturbances. However, King never regretted his actions. He responded to the letter explaining the reasons behind his nonviolent protest. Evidence from the letter indicates that King was passionate about justice. King explains that the main reason he was in Birmingham is rampant racial injustices experienced by African Americans. He argues that Birmingham is the most segregated city in the United States with ugly records of brutality and racially motivated violence. Due to these experiences, King is determined to fight for justice by imposing nonviolent tension to local and national government. He insists that because the attempts to end racial segregation and oppression have born no fruit, nonviolent protests remain the only alternative solution. King gives an example of how African Americans became victims of broken promises after negotiating with Birmingham leaders to remove the stores of humiliating racial signs.
