Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 22nd 1960. He was from a Haitian and Puerto Rican background. He was fluent in English, Spanish and French which led to his reading of French symbolist poetry that later had a great influence on his art. He was famously known as an artist who sprayed graffiti on Manhattan walls in the period between 1977 and early 1979. He did this alongside his artist friend, Al Diaz.
Basquiat’s art was packaged in a contemporary format and was against religion and politics. The art eventually led to him getting the attention of the counter cultural press, the most outstanding being the Village Voice. He played in the Gray band as a musician and was also a nightclub DJ in various clubs (Buchhart 5).
