In my endeavor to pursuing civil engineering as my profession, I carried out a face-to-face interview with one, Jack McCain, a senior civil engineering student at Sac State. I took this step to familiarize myself on the course contents, requirements and career opportunities. This was aimed at assisting me in making crucial decisions with regard to my career and University lifestyle. The following are the excerpts derived from the interview session.
Can you give me some brief background information on yourself?
My name is Jack McCain and I am a fourth year civil engineering and infrastructure student at this institution. My vision is to utilize the skills I have gained so far in serving the public as a civil engineer. Although there are many other areas to venture in this course, my interest concentrated on structural engineering, this is the reason I took up this path.
How much writing is generally required in classes for this major? What types of writing are required? (Essays, reports, case studies, group research)
Students who are interested in this field are expected to have high reasoning, mathematical and analytical skills. Therefore, the student must be good in mathematics. In addition, they must be able to posses good interpersonal and communication skills as they are expected to work as a team in the learning process. During the early stages of the course, mathematical concepts such as logarithms, probability, matrix algebra, basic differential equations, vectors, data transformation, integration, statistics and optimization are introduced to enable the students in tackling engineering issues.
Apart from the practical aspects, theoretical concepts are also expounded in this course. Undergraduate Students are required to research on and develop various essays related to their line of study such as architectural engineering, civil engineering, construction management and others.
During the course of study, students would be mandated to involve themselves in writing both short and lengthy reports and case studies. The reports may range from structural analysis, feasibility studies, environmental analysis and impact, hydrology, geology and so on. This is aimed at helping the students be exposed and develop practical skills in the profession. In addition, students are also required to conduct group studies and research as part of their studies.
