Anne Bradstreet vs. John Winthrop
Both Anne Bradstreet and John Winthrop were born in England. Anne Bradstreet was born in 1612 in Northamptonshire, while John Winthrop was born in 1588 in Groton England (Academy of American Poets para. 1). Both Bradstreet and Winthrop migrated to America. Bradstreet got married to Simon Bradstreet when she was 16 years. After two years, Bradstreet, in the company of her husband and parents, migrated to America alongside the Winthrop puritan group, and they settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Both Bradstreet and Winthrop migrated onboard a vessel called Arbella alongside 200 colonialists who called themselves Massachusetts Bay Company (Reuben para. 5).
Winthrop began writing during his migration to America. He wrote his first work while crossing the Atlantic Ocean and his first work was in form of a journal known as the Journal of the Transaction and Occurrence in the Settlement of Massachusetts and other New-England Colonies (Reuben para. 6). The journal was written from 1630 to 1649. While in transit to America, Winthrop delivered one of his most famous sermons referred to as Christian Charitie. This sermon helped in establishing Winthrop as a powerful and charismatic individual a factor that enabled him to become one of the most memorable governors of Massachusetts upon his arrival in America (Reuben para. 7). Both the works of Bradstreet and Winthrop were deeply inspired by their religious beliefs i.e. Christianity. Bradstreet was a well read and educated woman, which gave her advantages that enabled her to write authoritatively in subjects such as history, politics, theology, and medicine. It has been approximated that Bradstreet personal library contained 800 books. However, many of these books were destroyed when her home was burnt down (Kellogg 20).
Unlike Winthrop, Bradstreet was a well established author who wrote and published works in various subjects. Bradstreet was also a poet, and she wrote five quaternion epic poems with each having four parts. Her poems were mainly inspired by the world around her, and they mainly focused on religious and domestic themes. Bradstreet won critical acceptance in the 20th century especially for her series of religious poems called Contemplations, which she mainly wrote for her family and was never published until in the mid-19th century (Kellogg 21). Her poems were also deeply influenced by the 17th century poet Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas. On the contrary, Winthrop major work was the journal he wrote from 1630 to 1649, which mainly documented the history of the journey and settlement in America.
