Essay Instructions:

The story begins with Erec and Queen’s servant being humiliated by dwarf, who serves a knight and lady, in front of Queen Guinevere. In order to restore his honor, Erec

seeks vengeance from the knight, which later turned into a love story. In which he met the love of his life, Enite, who is nearly perfect in appearance (320). Courtly love is usually platonic relationship between man and woman. This appraisal from Hartman implies a strong connotation that the beauty of her countenance reflects the goodness in her, which might cause Erec to love her at the first place. When Erec met Enite for the first time, he already displayed his affection for her, because he promised Koralus, father of Enite, to marry her when he wins the competition. Erec participated in the competition of the sparrow-hawk for two purposes. First to prove his lady-love is the most beautiful one at Duke Imain’s festival, and second is to restore his honor by defeating the knight who insulted him. Erec, as the strongest man in the competition, wins the sparrow hawk to prove Enite is the most beautiful lady. This knight’s game embodies how courtly love functions in this text.
