First of all, this essay was written in a time when racism was at its peak, and the colored people were deemed unequal to their white counterparts. The author draws a distressing mood throughout the piece, but one cannot fail to realize and feel her strength and belief. The writer grew up in difficult times but despite this fact, her positive attitude, as well as inner happiness, were enough to propel her forward.
While reading this piece, emotions of sadness, joy, disgust, as well as hope, are evoked. Throughout the essay, the author’s attitude coupled with the fact that her color was a secondary concern for her evokes emotions of joy and hope.
