In my opinion, Locke’s theory is more plausible. In his second meditation, Descartes himself points out that the only thing that remains true is that nothing is certain. Therefore, Descartes contradicts himself by positing that genuine knowledge must be absolutely certain. Descartes’ position on knowledge is drawn greatly from the fields of science and mathematics. In these fields, knowledge has to be certain. For instance, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is certain because it has been proven multiple times through observation and mathematics. Similarly, Descartes’ works in geometry and algebra are certain because they have been proven arithmetically.
