Gabriel Conroy is a man of many faces. He has a family that he seems to deeply love, and his responsiveness is evidenced when he brings a party to liveliness with his presence and even offers to carve the goose. Gabriel has a good relationship with most of the people he interacts with. However, Gabriel is short tempered, sometimes socially awkward, and even frustrated with love. These many faces earn the Dubliner a number of adjectives both negative and positive.
Gabriel is constantly accused of not being able to forge connections with many of the female characters in the narrative including with Miss Ivors among others such as his wife Gretta and the housemaid named Lily. He easily offends his housemaid in many cases ad he on several occasions defensively stumbles into conversations with her and teases her about being in a relationship with another man. This character she finds is very obnoxious of Gabriel (Joyce 23).
On the contrary, his wife Gretta who he seems to deeply love, has for a long time inspired and continues to inspire tenderness and fondness in him. Gabriel, however, continues to remain the master in the relationship and therefore calls the shots when it comes to the marriage in many occasions. Notably, Gretta knows that her presence around her husband does not really inspire sympathy from Gabriel as this is just a non-deliberate unconscious response from within him to somehow behave to the immedia...
