Analysis of Death of a salesman
Death of a Salesman is a play that was exclusively written by an American Play wright 1949 Miller HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Miller" \o "Arthur Miller" Arthur. One of the most conspicuous characters in the play appears to be Biff. Biff Loman is the older son of Willy. In high school, he had potentials in games particularly football. He fails in Mathematics in his senior year simply because he saw Willy (his father) with another woman who was not his mother. Although his father wants him to become an established businessman in Boston, he ignores him and instead goes to West, in order to try his lack in farmland, a profession he happens to be contented with. This is because; he fantasizes being outdoors and not indoors, where he would use hands to fulfill his dreams. Although he engages in antisocial activities such as stealing, the motive is to show evidence of success, even if this evidence happens to be false. Generally, he remains realistic through out the play and informs his family that he is a normal person who embraces reality (Gans, 2012).
Biff struggles severely in keeping confined to reality. He ultimately succeeds in holding and upholding the facts and reawakening concerning his true status which brings hope to himself at the end of the calamity. Just like his father, this character finds himself to be lost, incomplete and “temporary “at first. In articulating that aspect, he claims “I don’t know what I really want” (1407). This further proves his dissatisfaction and frustration. In contrast to Willy who would not get away from delusions, Biff understands that knowing the truth about his family and himself concerning to what he really wants would require sacrifice, energy and confrontation.
